Future Norwegian design classics go under the hammer this week at Blomqvist

#auctionwatch: More than 30 Norwegian designers have contributed one-off pieces to Blomqvist’s ‘Unika’ auction, offering furniture, lighting and other homeware objects – much of it with a sculptural focus.

The pieces were initially displayed in Oslo as part of an exhibition curated by design collective Fold Oslo and hosted in a former bank headquarters in the city. They are now on show at the Norwegian auction house’s Fornebu showroom until the auction closes on 24 September 2023.

Designers were invited to share unique and unseen work, with many of them contributing prototype objects made by hand or focusing on more sustainable methods. Oslo-based weaver and artist Ida Hagen is auctioning a series of wall hangings made from bed sheets and scrap fabric – pieces she says ‘embrace the beauty of imperfections’ and ‘honour the value of repurposing’.

Also on the auction block are Kim Thomé’s brightly coloured wooden bowls, made on a traditional lathe and channelling some PoMo influences. Those looking for a bigger statement piece could bid on one of Poppy Lawman’s window-ledge mobiles, designed to bounce light into a room, or Edvin Klasson’s Ni timers undamon – a partition wall made from a discarded car door.

Bidding is all online, with prices starting around £100 for smaller objects, with the bigger pieces likely to stretch into the thousands.
