Welcome to our weekend property digest, where we bring together the best houses for sale (or rent) that we’ve unearthed across the world. Among this week’s discoveries is a period charmer in New Orleans and a piece of seaside heritage in Britain.

Mid-century modern beach house in California

3009 Beachcomber Drive by James Maul
Courtesy Tartaglia Realty

This beachfront home exudes mid-century modern style, and has been perfectly preserved in all its wood-panelled glory. Full-length windows mean the California property is drenched in sunlight, while wood-burning stoves and a log-lined veranda are on hand for cosying up on cool nights. The house, which was designed in 1971 by Big Sur architect James Maul, is just steps from the surf, and offers beach views from every angle. Step inside.

Shotgun house in New Orleans

The Louie
The Louie New Orleans holiday home for rent

Among our favourite rental homes we discovered this week is this gem in New Orleans. The Louie is replete with historic details – from period fireplaces to enormous windows – all of which have been loving restored by its owners. It dates back to around 1890, and is one of the city’s double–shotgun houses, named for their skinny stacked layout, which supposedly leaves room for a bullet to pass unimpeded from the front to the back of the building. Take a peek.

Stirling Prize-winning Hastings Pier

Hastings Pier, revamped by dRMM

It might only be a few months since dRMM’s revamped Hastings Pier won the Stirling Prize – and less than two years after its £14.2m renovation – but the structure is already looking for a new owner. Property agent GVA is overseeing its sale, after the charity that led its grand reopening went into administration at the end of last year. This one’s a chance to own a genuine piece of British seaside heritage. Have a look around.

Alaskan waterfront refuge

Hidden Bay Retreat in Alaska
Via Sotheby’s International Realty

The name gives the game away here for this waterfront chalet, which is tucked into a sheltered island that’s accessible only by seaplane or motor boat. Wraparound terraces mean there’s room to really enjoy the sea views, as well as take in the native wildlife – which includes rufus hummingbirds, and humpback and killer whales. Inside, the abundance of wood creates a classic cabin feeling, while a vast cathedral ceiling creates some drama in the central living space. Take a tour.

A raw beauty in Amsterdam

Amsterdam apartment for sale
Via Sotheby’s International Realty

There’s plenty of rough charm in this loft fixer-upper, which is all exposed brickwork and concrete flooring. It’s ready for a total refurb, with 4176 sq m of mostly open space to play with. Help is on hand as well, with local practice The Collective Studio – which includes developers, designers and artists – ready to transform it according to its new owner’s preference.
