This Sri Lankan eco-resort is designed to look like boulders

Sri Lanka’s Wild Coast Tented Lodge is built to blend into the rocks and boulders that dot Yala National Park.

Nomadic Resorts and Bo Reudler Studio teamed up to design the the 28-tent safari resort, which sits on the edge of the nature reserve in the south of the country for Resplendent Ceylon.

Dome-shaped pavilions at Wild Coast Tented Lodge house a waterfront bar, restaurant, spa and library. The organic-looking structures have been built using bamboo and natural materials, and feature tawny, timber shingled exteriors with arched openings, evoking the pads of a leopard’s paw.

Interiors are the handiwork of Bo Reudler Studio. Says the practice: ‘Whereas the architecture focuses on the outer form of the boulders, the interior recalls the treasures concealed within them such as caves, crystals and veins of precious minerals.’

Latticed, 10-metre-high ceilings combine with stone floors, quartz and mud brick inside the Ten Tuskers bar and Dining Pavilion, and are offset by copper and brass accented teak furniture. The resort’s swimming pool snakes its way through the restaurant, which is crowned by an illuminated copper-leaf tree, which has been hung from the ceiling.

Sleeping quarters are dotted across the forest: pillowy, fabric ‘Cocoon’ suites feature vaulted ceilings and double-height glass facades that peak onto the surrounding landscape. Interiors channel a colonial vibe, with a net-covered king-size bed, teak furniture and free-standing copper bathtub taking centre stage.

Each cocoon is set around a natural watering hole and has a private viewing deck for bird watching, while four beach-facing suites have views of the Indian Ocean as well as private plunge pools.

Urchin suites – which comprise a main cocoon and adjacent, additional urchin-shaped tents – cater for families and can sleep up to eight. Prices at Wild Coast Tented Lodge in start from around US$ 294 per night, and activities include safaris, spa facilities and excursions to ancient Buddhist sites nearby.
