The Malin Flatiron takes co-working to a smarter place

The new Manhattan location is the company’s largest yet

What constitutes a workspace? In New York it is less a debate between ‘home’ and ‘office’ than a weekday mood board, a fluid concept that inspires, calms, excites, encourages collaboration and does the job all round. One of several companies geared toward that in-between space, The Malin recently opened its fifth private membership-driven venue in New York, and it hits all the right notes for entrepreneurs wary of home-working and sceptical of the traditional office. At 32,700 sq ft, The Malin Flatiron is the company’s largest power-space thus far, and the most quintessentially New York.

Spanning two floors, with a mezzanine overlooking the second, the space came with all the details of the original building, so the intervention was light-handed. The Malin’s in-house design team complemented existing soaring ceilings, timber trusses, steel columns, expansive windows, and tall custom timber doors and arched thresholds. They separated solid oak desks — 36 in all — with recycled crystal dividers and added seating in a moody palette of fabrics. Original art complements the refined palette of colour and texture.

The dedicated floors are segmented with 20 private offices, three meeting rooms, a 14-seat boardroom and several phone booths. Two kitchens and two libraries add opportunities to connect and share ideas. The Malin has also announced a partnership with Equinox gym below, which benefits members of both entities.

Interested parties can hire a temporary room or desk, or purchase a long-term membership.
