The Edition’s first Mexico location opens its doors on the Riviera Maya

Ian Schrager’s Edition hotel chain shows no signs of stopping, with a new Riviera Maya location on a 620-acre nature reserve, its first property in Mexico.

Part of the luxury resort community of Kanai, midway between Cancun and Tulum, the coastal property sits within a mangrove forest with two miles of white-sand beachfront. Its three buildings include a bamboo meeting place festooned with tropical greenery designed by Eduardo Neira, which undulates toward the sea. A visual centrepiece, it also houses a dedicated yoga space and deck, where guests might spot iguanas, spider monkeys, anteaters, indigenous white-nose coatis and hundreds of bird species.

Interiors by Ian Schrager Company, in collaboration with Rockwell Group and Edmonds International, draw from the natural landscape of the Yucatan peninsula, known for its mangroves, lagoons, tropical beaches and the Mesoamerican Reef, the world’s second-largest coral reef. The team built with local materials like limestone, timber and bamboo, adding a showcase travertine staircase and floating cabanas on an oversized lagoon-like swimming pool. Sandy pathways carved into the grounds rise and fall relative to the green surrounds.

Guest bedrooms have a neutral palette, four-poster beds, curved seating and upholsteries that reflect the region’s embroidery and patterning techniques. The bathrooms have slatted-wood paneling, more delicate than the screens around the main entrance. Some rooms feature plunge pools and terraces with ocean or mangrove views. Spaces are decorated with artisanal ceramics, Mexican art and local flora.
