Take a whistlestop tour of the world’s most fascinating architecture

The Architectural Photography Awards has announced this year’s shortlist, and images of monumental art galleries, temples carved into rock and striking suburban homes are all vying to take home the top prize.

For the last ten years, the awards have welcomed entries from photographers around the world and spotlighted imagery of all kinds of architecture. Categories span everything from photos of interiors and exteriors to bridges, transport hubs, and work that evokes a sense of place, with one photographer’s image deemed the overall winner.

This year’s shortlist is as diverse as ever, featuring architecture from around the globe. Some entrants have documented buildings alive with people, such as Simon Kennedy’s shot of Istanbul airport, while others capture moments of contemplation, for example, Hu Kangyu’s image of a snow-covered Chapel of Sound in China’s Chengde.

All the photographs will be on display at the World Architecture Festival in Lisbon from 30 November to 2 December.
