Surrey river island home lists for £1.85m

Life moves at a different pace on Wheatley’s Eyot – a small, car-free island on the Surrey stretch of the River Thames. And this BCDH Architects designed home makes sure that life revolves completely around its ebb and flow

The stilted, three-bedroom Surrey property sits on a secluded plot on the eight-hectare island, which is located above Sunbury-On-Thames. It has a single-storey plan, perching above grass and wildflower meadows, with river views to the front and creek views to the rear. Sapele cladding helps bed the rectangular volume into its natural site, and the weatherproof skin will take on a greyish hue over time, disguising it even further.

Inside, rooms and bright and white, with floor-to-ceiling glass capturing bursts of the natural setting in every room and lofty three-metre-high ceilings exaggerating the sense of volume. The island home is listed via The Modern House for £1.85m, and every element takes cues from its bucolic setting, from the living room and its cosy wood-burning stove to slate wall coverings.

The main house has two bedrooms, with the third in a separate annexe with an en suite, and there’s also a standalone studio space down the garden.
