Richard Neutra’s hillside Bonnet House in LA lists for $1.7m

Set on a sloping site in the Hollywood Hills, Richard Neutra’s Bonnet House is a compact piece of architectural history.

The architect designed the Los Angeles property in 1942, angling it to take advantage of the surrounding hilly landscape and views across the city, and earning widespread praise from architectural critics of the time.

Bonnet House – on the market for $1.7m via Architecture For Sale – makes the most of its vantage point, with wrap-around ribbon windows and a living area that opens onto a flagstone terrace. Trees and bushes surround the two-bedroom midcentury property, and a sizeable yard is concealed behind the house.

Richard Neutra’s original floor plan remains in place, although the property has been updated since the 1940s – even undergoing a painstaking ten-year renovation by LA playwright David Hay in the early 2000s. The glass-walled master bedroom not only has sweeping views, it also includes an open hearth fireplace with, unusually for Neutra, distinctive curved walls. Other features include wooden flooring, timber panelling and high, sloping ceilings.
