Richard Neutra gem The Loring House lists for $8m in Los Angeles

And it comes with a striking guest studio by Steven Ehrlich

Modernist fans can get more than they bargained for at Richard Neutra’s Loring House in the Hollywood Hills, which comes with a striking guest-house by architect Steven Ehrlich.

Neutra designed The Loring House for choreographer Eugene Loring in 1958, using a low-slung ‘boxcar’ style, meaning the house has a boxy, freight-car style silhouette with sliding glass doors on the side that opens to the garden.

The house has breezy modernist staples such as concrete slab flooring, a plethora of sliding glass walls, a feature fireplace in the living room and a ton of built-in furniture designed for the three-bedroom LA property. Neutra also proposed an additional suite for the 0.65-acre property, which was realised by firm Escher GuneWardena using the modernist’s original plans, with glass walls looking straight onto canyon views.

According to the LA Times, the Loring House is currently owned by ‘LA’s high priestess of beauty’ Cassandra Grey, who founded beauty brand Violet Grey and is the widow of late Paramount Pictures movie producer and exec Brad Grey.

The compound is listed for $7.995m with Carl Gambino, and as well as the original Neutra’s gem, it comes with a separate guest house designed by Culver City-based architect Steven Ehrlich, whose landmarks include the UC Irvine Contemporary Art Centre.

Though not the ‘star of the show’, the two-bedroom studio comes a very close second. Like Neutra’s main design, it has a boxy silhouette and a towering wall of floor-to-ceiling steel-framed glass with garden and canyon views.
