MoreySmith transforms a gin distillery into a subterranean recording studio

Sony Music’s new Clerkenwell hub is designed for emerging artists

London is a city steeped in music history, attracting performers to the capital for centuries and birthing some of the world’s most beloved bands and records. Sony Music’s new Clerkenwell recording studio looks to add to that legacy, reviving a 195-year-old warehouse as a series of cutting-edge music studios designed for emerging artists.

Local practice MoreySmith oversaw the adaptive reuse of the Grade II-listed building – previously the J&W Nicholson Gin Distillery – which spans four storeys.

The firm worked closely with Sony Music producers and sound engineers to tailor each of the ten recording studios to deliver the best audio experience while retaining the historic fibre of the structure, including its weathered brick walls.

Clean, contemporary additions contrast historic tells – think herringbone floorboards in pale wood, sculptural, tubular light fittings and velvet tub chairs, and Crittal doors and windows.

The Gin Factory’s ten recording studios are outfitted with custom-designed control desks and best-in-class acoustics and are interspersed with lounge areas where recording artists can relax between takes.
