Montreal’s Supernat cafe beautifully mixes texture and polish

Rough masonry meets painstakingly laid mosaic tiles at this cafe and wine bar in Montreal’s Hochelaga-Maisonneuve.

Local studio Ménard Dworkind designed Supernat’s interiors, which mix rough-and-ready details with beautiful examples of lighting and furniture design.

Exposed bricks and unfinished plasterwork have been left well alone and, together with the cafe’s steel girders, lend the space an industrial atmosphere. However, the white and green mosaic floor and the custom Lambert & Fils lights tell a different story.

Stools are upholstered in forest green and bright orange – the same colour Ménard Dworkind used to pick out some of the cafe’s supporting beams. Wooden floors and furniture add a sense of welcome to the interiors, while chrome-rimmed coffee tables and white banquettes add some diner-style vintage charm.

Guests can climb the library-style ladder to pick out wine and coffee for sale, or order an espresso from the bar.
