Minimalism meets Victorian glamour at Penang hotel The Prestige

Malaysian hotel The Prestige has taken over a former godown in Penang, bringing elements of classic Victorian design, as well as some sleight of hand, to the site.

The interiors, by Singapore studio Ministry of Design, are inspired by the art of illusion, and as such incorporate some visual trickery.

Guests are greeted by a reception desk that appears to balance on chrome orbs, while magician’s props dot across the hotel. Secret rooms lie behind hidden doors, and even the beds in The Prestige’s 162 rooms appear to ‘levitate’.

Guest suites – which start from RM420 – have clean lines and a simple colour palette. However, in the downstairs restaurant, the Victorian influence is apparent thanks to monochrome patterned floors and a hothouse-style collection of plants. In the evening, guests can sip a cocktail on the roof terrace or take a dip in The Prestige’s saltwater pool.
