It might resemble a spaceship but this retro prefab home – on the market via Architecture de Collection for €130,000 – is a rare piece of design history.

Finnish architect Matti Suuronen created the Futuro model in 1968, though less than 100 of the futuristic fibreglass pods were made and fewer than 60 exist today. This one has been fully restored, complete with trademark porthole windows, a drop-down hatch staircase and original ‘sleeper’ chairs.

Just 8-metres wide, the structure – which sits atop a metal base and comprises one central dome-shaped living space – can be dismantled into 16 smaller segments for easy relocation.

Suuronen originally envisaged the Futuro as a ski chalet because it warms up quickly and its stilt-like legs help it bed-down in difficult terrain.

Few actually made it to the slopes though. Many models have succumbed to the ravages of time, while others have been repurposed as novelty locations (one is a VIP lounge at a Florida strip club).

And though the Jetson lifestyle isn’t for everyone, you can sample it for yourself courtesy of London’s Central Saint Martin’s… A turquoise Futuro house will be sitting on its roof until 2017.
