The wavy brick effect on Marea’s Beverly Hills facade offers a hint at what’s inside. The new Italian seafood restaurant from the high-flying Altamarea Group is a polished power-lunch destination serving fresh seafood and homemade pastas alongside a comprehensive menu of caviars, oysters and sashimi from the Pacific, seven miles away.
Marea Beverly Hills’ surf-and-turf interiors are by New York-based Nusla Design, which worked on Marea 1.0 opposite Central Park. Here in LA, the studio was able to prioritise a deep outdoor terrace in navy blue and crisp white, privatised by floral living walls. This leads inside to a dining room with louvred windows and leather banquette seating. A hand-crafted Murano-glass chandelier in sea-blue recalls the restaurant’s Manhattan cousin.
Glossy mahogany wood panelling with a pronounced wavy grain runs through this space to a backlit onyx bar dominating the far wall. Striations in the stone, together with the wood texture and psychedelic paintings by London artist Nasser Azam, lend the effect of being (safely) underwater.
The Italian seafood restaurant opened quietly last winter, working on word of mouth. Its New York sibling has been frequented by Lady Gaga and Jennifer Lopez, so it seems likely that Marea’s LA location will become the stuff of Hollywood lore.
