Living roofs top these lakeside lodges in New Zealand’s Queenstown

The new development will celebrate nature

Situated by the side of Lake Wakatipu, the eco-friendly Waimarino Luxury Lodge development is designed to harmonise with its waterfront location.

The minimal villas – yet to be built but available for investment as a rental property – will be located in the southwest of the Otago region, in New Zealand’s South Island. They’ll occupy a prime spot, surrounded by trees and with views over the nearby lake as well as the mountains beyond.

Seen from a distance, the homes take on a grassy, stepped appearance, thanks to their boxy footprint and their planted roofs. Guests can retreat to their villas, or venture into the development’s communal garden and orchard, yoga studio, or restaurant. An emphasis on sustainability means the homes rely on solar power and include lake and spring-fed water.

Lake Wakatipu – which is home to a Maori monster of legend, Matau, who supposedly sleeps at the bottom of the water – has year-round trout fishing, and is located close to popular cycling and walking trails.
