Legendary Kiwi architect Ron Sang’s former home is for sale

When architect Ron Sang designed this 1970s property as his family home, he was already a prominent figure in New Zealand’s architectural scene, having designed a cache of modernist homes across the country—including his seminal Auckland project, Brake House, for photographer Brian Brake.

He designed the four-bedroom property at 58 Hapua Street in Remuera, Auckland, in 1973. It features a cedar and concrete façade, along with his signature glass boxes, cantilevering into the trees (similar to Brake House). An avid art collector and publisher, in addition to being an influential architect, The Sang House took its cues from its creator’s obsession and was designed to accommodate his vast art collection.

The 309 sq m home is wrapped in Japanese-style gardens—including a mosaic swimming pool added in the 1980s—designed by Ted Smyth, a frequent collaborator of Sang and one of New Zealand’s best-known landscape architects.

Sang died in 2021 at the age of 82.

Hapua Street is something of a pilgrimage site for fans of modernist architecture: besides Sang’s home, other properties on the street were designed by the likes of Claude Megson and Geoff Newman.
Steve and Nila Koerber of Bayleys Real Estate are marketing the Auckland property with price by negotiation. It was previously sold in 2021 for around NZ$4m (according to One Roof).
