Josef Frank’s Villa Beer is ripe for renovation

An icon of 1920s European modernism

Modernism lovers seeking a restoration project are in luck: a 1920s villa by Austrian-born architects Josef Frank and Oskar Wlach is for sale in Vienna, and it’s ripe for renovation.

The Hietzing home is one of Frank’s most important works and is considered to be an icon of European modernism on par with Le Corbusier’s Villa Savoye.

The 10-bedroom Vienna property embodies Frank’s artistic style of modernism, which put comfort and homeliness at its centre. Villa Beer’s white cubic structure features a cantilevered box that projects into the garden.

Its interior meanwhile unravels around a three-storey living space, with 5-meter ceilings and huge windows.

The Austrian property is on sale for €5.3million with Knight Frank and requires some restoration and restructuring.
