Icaro Hotel is a contemporary take on the traditional timber mountain lodge

The Dolomites’ first climate-neutral outpost

MoDusArchitects has turned a 1930s lodge in the Dolomites into a fully-fledged eco-hotel – supported by clusters of huge tree-like columns.

Set within South Tyrol’s Alpe di Siusi, the Icaro Hotel has reopened after a total revamp by the practice. Communal spaces have been added to and reorganized, new rooms built, and a sweeping wooden colonnade installed – which the architects say ‘intercepts the breathtaking mountain views’.

The Icaro sits at the heart of a web of ski slopes and hiking trails, offering rooms that are simply furnished but come with big landscape views. Pieces from the family history of the hotel owner are on display inside the hotel, alongside a series of contemporary art pieces curated by Hubert Kostner. He’s also contributed his own installation made of melted wax, as a reference to the story of Icarus.

Rooms at the Icaro – which claims to be the first climate-neutral ski resort in the Dolomites – start from €342 per night.

After a tiring day on the slopes, guests can hole up in the resort’s spa and swimming pool, or peruse the collection of art, with interventions across the hotel by
Michael Sailstorfer, Hubert Kostner and other South Tyrolean artists.
