Holiday home of the week: a hotelier’s moody New York townhouse

With interiors by Anouska Hempel

Live like a hotelier in this sumptuous New York townhouse.

Architect Jonathan Schloss gut renovated the Manhattan property – which belongs to the owner of a group of boutique hotels in Singapore – back in 2012, adding a modern glass-encased master suite to the top of the landmarked Italianate building.

‘The overall concept for the renovation was to bridge the townhouse’s original historical character with contemporary design,’ says Schloss.

Shared living areas inside the West Village home use a rich palette of limestone and dark bronze as the foundation, and interior designer Anouska Hempel crafted its sumptuous, but moody interiors around them.

Dark walls jibe with floor-to-ceiling glass, mirrors, low-slung velvet sofas and brass accented furniture. Meanwhile, a huge fireplace dominates the sitting room, adding a sense of cosiness to the sitting room and a smattering of Asian artworks and objets d’art nod to the owner’s heritage.

Rising through the five-bedroom Manhattan property – which sleeps up to 10, and is available from $2205 per night via One Fine Stay – the colour palette softens with a mix of glass, steel and smooth venetian plaster coated walls.

The master bedroom is drenched in light thanks to a wall of glass, and it has its own private balcony from which to enjoy views of the surrounding neighbourhood.

Rarer for New York, the Manhattan holiday home has its own private terrace and garden, which is split across-two levels and is bursting with flora.
