Holiday home of the week: a Caribbean cottage designed by Piet Boon

Designer Piet Boon designed this Caribbean island home, which is a contemporary take on the traditional salt miner’s cottages of Bonaire.

Villa 72&Sunny is part of Piet Boon Bonaire, a cluster of eight individually-designed beachfront properties built by the Dutchman on the island. Bonaire is some 50 miles off the coast of Venezuela and is known for its sandy beaches and watersport activities.

‘The villas in Bonaire are always in the sun,’ explains Boon, ‘so I tried to design it in a way where the wind is blowing through the space and you don’t need air-conditioning all the time.’

Boon (who started his career as a building contractor) designed the enclave so each villa is individual and all come with a private garden and swimming pool. Villa 72&Sunny sits directly on the waterfront, with a shaded terrace looking onto the Caribbean sea.
