It’s all about the shadow play at this Sicilian villa, which sits on a hilltop looking out towards the Mediterranean Sea.

Casa Vera is a contemporary Italian holiday home designed by architect Gordon Guillaumier using chiaroscuro. As the sun moves over the villa, its floating iron grill casts geometric shadows across its terraces and courtyards like a painting.

Interior spaces have polished concrete floors, walls and ceilings whose cool tones contrast with the vibrant landscape surrounding the retreat. Its industrial kitchen-diner features a dark marble work surface and grey subway tiles, and floor-to-ceiling glass doors lead out to an al fresco dining courtyard with panoramic views.

In the living room, bright Sicilian tiles inject a hit of colour into the five-bedroom property, which is furnished with a contemporary and Modernist-style design pieces.

Casa Vera is available to rent exclusively via The Thinking Traveller from €6,220 to €13,890 per week. In addition to the main house, there’s a cobalt swimming pool and dépendance – furnished with sofas and chairs for lounging, or star gazing at night – as well as several terraces for sunbathing.
