Holiday home of the week: a rugged retreat in Pringle Bay, South Africa

Set at the foot of a mountain

When it comes to dramatic views, South Africa’s Restio River House has all bases covered…

The Pringle Bay villa sits at the foot of the Hangklip mountain on the Western Cape, looking out to the South Atlantic Ocean. Cape Town-based practice Saota designed the contemporary holiday home to make the most of its natural surrounds, capturing unique views from each of its rooms via floor-to-ceiling glass windows.

‘The landscape has a rawness, with seasonal and daily shifts reminding you how profound it is to live in such a beautiful place,’ says practice director Philip Olmesdahl. He lived on the site for 10 years prior to building Restio River House. ‘Experiencing the property before building allowed us to create a home that captured the spirit of the place – or at least as we know it.’

The South African holiday villa is available to rent directly from R9 850 per night, and its layered, boxy form is designed to reflect the lines of the horizon and landscape. Its ground floor living room and terraces are also oriented to catch the dramatic sunsets over Cape Point.

A black steel staircase rises up past the kitchen and living room to the villa’s private quarters, which can sleep up to 10 people. Furnishing meanwhile mix French, Moroccan and South African influences, with some pieces made bespoke by practice ARRCC.

Restio River House is steps from the Buffels River, and is surrounded by milkwood and coral trees indigenous to the area. Pringle Bay falls within the UNESCO protected Kogelberg Biosphere reserve, and the property is an hour and half’s drive from Cape Town.
