Think ‘historic features’ and you probably imagine fireplaces, stucco mouldings or stained glass. But the little red house in the Swedish town of Visby has one on a much larger scale…

Dating from the late 17th century, the wooden cabin and its outhouses are built into the town’s medieval walls, and feature soaring stone battlements as their backdrop.

Visby - Executioner house from the late 1600s

On the small side at 50 sq m, the single-storey house has two mezzanine sleeping areas tucked above an open-plan living room and kitchen. Outside, gardens are set within the old walls.

According to the listing, the house belonged to the area’s executioner back in the 18th century… Today, it’s better served as a holiday home but it’ll need a dose of TLC to return to its historic best.

If its grisly past doesn’t put you off, it’s on the market starting at 2,529,000 SEK via Bertwig.
