A whimsical Georgian townhouse rises over central Margate

Previous owners have peeled back 20th-century additions of this Grade II-listed Margate townhouse, made during its former life as a convalescence home and private residence.

Gordon House, as the property is known, is listed with Auctoot for £1.295m and dates from the Georgian period. Much of the 4,903 sq ft building’s original architectural features – including wood floors, tilework, skirting boards, picture rails, and Victorian marble fireplace surrounds – have been gently restored and given a polish reinstating the historic vibe. Rounded archways lead feature in the main hallway and between the front and back lounges.

Close to the main train station and Margate town centre, Gordon House has four bathrooms and art studios painted in heritage gem tones. Tilework in the triangular farmhouse kitchen is echoed in the main bathroom. Upstairs, double-arched doors close off two ample double bedrooms and tall Georgian windows fitted with custom drapery.
