Ceramicist’s converted dye mill is for sale in Rhode Island

The ultimate live/work space

We ventured inside the Rhode Island live/work studio of ceramicist Jim Schatz last year – and now it’s on the market for $899,000.

Shatz and his partner Peter Souza spent a year renovating the 1880s Providence complex, which was originally part of Weybosset Mills in Olneyville. The couple converted the 7,100 sq ft industrial structure into a colossal pottery studio and home, with separate guest accommodation at the front.

The heritage-listed building – listed via Circa Old Houses – spans an entire block and retains its 20-ft-high trussed ceilings, as well as brick floors, rafters and 160 black-framed windows.

Brick walls have been given a lick of paint, while pipes inside the four-bedroom property have been left exposed to hone its industrial aesthetic.
