Annie Morris brings her teetering sculptures to Château La Coste in Aix-en-Provence

Her colourful ‘Stack’ and tapestries inaugurate the new Oscar Niemeyer Pavilion

British sculptor Annie Morris is the first artist to exhibit inside the new Oscar Niemeyer Pavilion at the Chateau La Coste in Aix-en-Provence, bringing a series of her famous ‘Stack’ sculptures and tapestries to the modernist building.

Newly opened, the gallery is said to be one of the Brazilian architect’s final designs and is the jewel in the crown of the historic vineyard, which boasts a restaurant, event space and Tadao Ando-designed culture centre.

Morris’s teetering spherical totems and colourful tapestries fill the pavilion, taking on a joyful dialogue with the architecture as their curves contrast straight lines and bathe in light from skylights overhead.

Says Morris: ‘My sculptures are about holding onto something that’s fallen, and to express the hope and defiance of life.’

More playfully, the human-like Stacks appear as though they’re quietly admiring the landscape beyond the glass – peering out towards Morris’ six-metre-tall bronze sculpture, installed permanently in the Château La Coste’s gardens.

Annie Morris at the Oscar Niemeyer Pavilion runs until September 2022 at Château La Coste 2750 Route De La Cride, 13610 Le Puy-Sainte-Réparade, France.
