A slinky ‘accordion’ home hits the market in Austin by Alterstudio

Vertical timber slats create its ‘stretched’ appearance

Award-winning practice Alterstudio Architects designed this striking geometric home in Austin, Texas, which is shaped like a stretched accordion.

Completed in 2019, the 3,000 sq ft Austin property comprises a glass and brick base that is topped by a wooden-clad upper volume. A central courtyard sits at the heart of the three-bedroom home, while vertical slats give it a concertina-like appearance and enclose the carport, secreted beneath the cantilevered upper level.

The three-bedroom home is on the market for $1.949m via Christine White of The Boutique Real Estate and features floor-to-ceiling glass in the main living spaces that look onto the courtyard – a zen garden planted with greenery and gravel.

Interiors layer natural materials: wooden floors are complemented by timber walls, bespoke cabinetry, and glass. Rooms are orientated to maximise natural light, with the kitchen wrapping around the courtyard.
