A rosy-pink palace on the outskirts of Lisbon lists for €3.9m

No rose-tinted glasses are needed when viewing this pink palace on the outskirts of Lisbon because the handsome 19th-century mansion has already undergone a total renovation that preserves its historic character.

The horse-shoe-shaped villa sits on a private 4.7-hectare estate in Setúbal, around 30 miles from downtown Lisbon (still part of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area), on the edge of a nature reserve.

Originally, the mansion was the weekend retreat of a count and countess. It’s just emerged from a six-year renovation that restored and modernised it inside and out. The building’s façade has been repaired and painted a jaunty pink shade, complemented by period azulejos (tiles). Restored interior features include original herringbone parquet flooring and bathroom azulejos updated with modern hardware.

The Portuguese property has 25 rooms, the grandest of which are on the ground floor and include a sweeping hall with a period fireplace and staircase. A series of interconnected reception rooms culminate with a covered veranda serving as an outdoor living room.

What was originally the lower-ground floor servant quarters is now a large 45 sq m kitchen with a huge four-metre-long island for prepping and entertaining. An old fireplace nods to its history, but the rest of the level is reconfigured to include a series of flexible rooms, a walk-in pantry, bathroom, storage, utilities, and a wine cellar.

Fantastic Frank Lisbon is selling the nine-bedroom Lisbon property for €3.9m. It includes a new saltwater pool, surrounded by landscaped gardens and decorated with Calçada tiling.

The grounds neighbour the Arrábida nature reserve and are extremely fertile with an array of trees, including lemon, lime, grapefruit, apple, plum, nectarine and orange trees, all producing fruit. There’s also an existing kitchen garden and outdoor kitchen for entertaining in the summer.

Downtown Lisbon is a 40-minute drive away but the beach is under 2 miles away.
