Canadian practice Partisans has drawn on the billowing tarps of Mexico’s market places as the inspiration for Toronto restaurant Quetzal.
The serene interiors of the College Street Mexican restaurant feature an undulating ceiling that appears to almost swell and ripple above the bar and dining room below.
‘With Quetzal we wanted to design graceful, sinuous shapes that elicit a sense of tranquillity – a quiet contrast to the fiery activity of the open kitchen,’ explains Partisans cofounder Pooya Baktash.
Lighting has been concealed inside the gentle curves of the eatery’s sculptural ceiling, which is made using glass fibre-reinforced gypsum. The calming vibe is honed further through the use of concrete and plaster and wooden tables and chairs.
A 24-foot-long open grill takes pride of place in the Toronto restaurant’s kitchen, which serves up modern Mexican fare.
