Monochrome plays a starring role at Toronto restaurant Alobar Downtown

Mason Studio puts a fresh spin on the classic bistro

Mason Studio used lashings of black and white to create ‘an upscale experience with a laidback spirit’ for Toronto’s Alobar Downtown.

Located inside the Medcan building, in the heart of the city’s financial district, the restaurant is a fresh addition to the city’s dining scene. Mason Studio has channelled some classic bistro design choices for the space, installing marble-topped tables, low-backed wooden chairs and leather banquettes. Colour creates different ‘zones’ in the restaurant, with the bar area decked out in deep charcoal that fades into more muted caramel tones in the dining room.

One entire wall of the restaurant’s interior is lined with windows, with potted palms basking in the shafts of sunlight that stream in. At night, the space is lit by rows of sculptural pendants featuring curving shades that contrast the geometric, interlocking pattern of the floor.

On the menu from Michelin-starred chefs Patrick Kriss and Rebekah Bruce is a mix of meat and seafood dishes, including lobster, oysters and short rib.
