This spa and hotel is a modern oasis in the Sharjah desert

The Al Faya Lodge and Spa offers unspoiled desert views from its saltwater pool, which sits at the foot of the UAE’s Mount Alvaah in the Sharjah desert.

It was originally a clinic and grocery store, constructed in the 1960s, but has been completely overhauled by London and Dubai-based practice Anarchitect, which is headed up by Jonathan Ashmore. Now, steel panels open to reveal the sandy landscape, and teak panelled interiors contrast the spa’s stone walls – a testament to its adaptive reuse.

There are five bedrooms on offer at Al Faya Lodge and Spa – each of which has its own skylight for stargazing – as well as a library and roof terrace. Guests can lounge by the pool, or choose from three salt spa treatments; heat, water and salt inhalation.
