This East London apartment offers elevated industrial calm

Londoners rarely get a glimpse inside the art deco buildings filling the gaps in the old East End streetscape. But this rehabilitated warehouse off a low-key stretch Old Street offers a good glimpse of their potential. The two-bedroom apartment was recently updated by architect Julie Richards to harness light, height and views to a leafy courtyard. The finished product made the media rounds and featured in ‘Britain’s Best Home’ on Channel 4. It’s currently listed with the Modern House for £1.25m.

On the first floor of Martha’s Buildings, the East London property features recessed lighting in the ceiling, walls and, most crucially, the epoxy resin floors, which becomes a hallmark quality of the property while clearing sight lines from room to room. The industrial kitchen has been realised in stainless steel and glass with uplighting along the rear wall and built-in bespoke lighting in the glass island. The hob is an original Renzo Piano Smeg piece with a matching extractor. An office nook has been discreetly tucked away behind the kitchen.

The this space steps down a concrete stair to a sunken lounge with built-in modular furnishings and timber floors. A wall of sliding glass doors opens directly to an interior balcony. To the rear of the plan are two ensuite bedrooms with built-in storage and a modular doorway system that allows for flexible layouts. The main ensuite has a shower, a large freestanding bath and sanitary ware by Starck 1.

The neighbourhood couldn’t be better for professionals who love a walkable, ever-changing urban fabric. The street is moments from markets, restaurants, shops, theatre and live music, with a Tube stop steps away and easy access to the Thames.
