Property of the week: a private island hideaway in Sweden

Some 30,000 skerries, rocks and islands make up the Stockholm Archipelago, which spreads out across the Baltic Sea. Many of these are small and uninhabited but this private island less than an hour from the city comes complete with a Modernist dwelling.

Grötskär is a 242,000 acre parcel of land that’s a mix of rocky terrain and pine tree woodland. The island, on the market via Residence Real Estate for 39 m SEK, has a natural bay that almost divides it in half, with the main house, designed by Jordens Arkitekter, on the north part of the outcrop.

The practice built the five-bedroom villa in 2009. Its simple, single-storey design features floor-to-ceiling windows, balconies and terraces that maximise views of the sea and sunsets to the west.

Communal living spaces – the kitchen, dining room and living room – are all open-plan and feature white walls, wooden floors and custom cabinetry. Bedrooms and bathrooms have been tucked into the rear of the property, with storage and utilities in the basement.

Down by the water’s edge, a short walk from the main house, there’s a modern one-bedroom guesthouse, and a sauna house that sits on one of the island’s piers.

Grötskär is around 50 minutes by boat from Stockholm, and only 10 minutes from Dalaro so while it’s secluded, it’s close enough to civilisation to be commutable. And boat rides sure beat taking the train/tube everyday…
