London loft inside a Victorian-era omnibus station asks for £1.65m

Hard loft living is on offer at this south London apartment, designed by Space Group inside an old Victorian omnibus station.

The three-bedroom Camberwell property extends across two levels of the brick and beam building known as Hopewell Yard, taking prime spot beneath its vaulted, skylit ceiling.

Hopewell Yard was originally renovated in 1990 by architect David Quigley and converted into live/work units with a postmodern bent. Quigley’s colourful interventions blended the original Victorian structure with porthole windows, polychromatic brickwork, art deco motifs and primary-coloured balustrades.

The apartment’s current owners tapped Space Group to give its interiors a revamp, maximising its lofty proportions and light flow. Polished concrete floors, exposed brick and patinated steel beams offer a rich framework for living. Smoked glass doors peel back to reveal the open-plan living, kitchen and dining space.

A mezzanine level within the eaves of the building houses a double bedroom and leads to a terrace surrounded by glazed walls at the front.

The Modern House is listing the south London property for £1.65m. It’s a short walk from Camberwell’s famous College of Arts, 6a’s South London Gallery, pubs and restaurants.
