Sitting between two 19th-century windmills known locally as Jack and Jill, this award-winning house in west Sussex has a long and storied history.

Originally a mill house and adjoining granary dating to the 1860s, the Grade II-listed property was first renovated by golf writer and broadcaster Henry Longhurst in 1963, before undergoing a radical overhaul by RIBA-winning architects Featherstone Young last year.

Its new design is unquestionably modern, and features a gleaming jumble of cubes with a triple-height central living space and vast windows. The practice also created a punched aluminium façade, with a seed-scatter design that makes reference to the structure’s original purpose.

Renovations to the former granary building have retained its original timber framework, and transformed the structure into a large entertainment and performance space, complete with Steinway grand piano.

The Mill House and Granary are available to rent through The Modern House starting from £4,990 a week, and can sleep 17 across seven bedrooms.

There’s plenty to do around the UK holiday home too. It’s close to the South Downs National Park, which has some of the best views and walking trails in the country.

The intrepid can travel the 20 miles to Charleston, former home of Vanessa Bell and the Bloomsbury Group; the less adventurous can simply wander next door. While renovation works to the Jack Windmill are still in progress, Jill Windmill is still operational and is open to visitors most of the year.
