A 120-year-old kyomachiya hits the market in Kyoto for $2.36m

Sitting to the south of Kyoto’s Imperial Palace in the city’s historical district is this restored kyomachiya, complete with a Japanese garden.

The Nakagyo Ward townhouse – on the market via Hachise for $2.358m – is set over two floors and dates back to 1890. It underwent a total restoration in 2014, including structural reinforcement.

Kyomachiya were originally merchant’s homes and the timber dwellings were built with earthen walls and baked tile roofs. Two tatami rooms lead into its main living space, which is set around a tsuboniwa – courtyard garden planted with indigenous blossom trees and flowers.

Traditional features across the Kyoto property include shoji and fusuma sliding doors and a hibukuro skylight above the kitchen.
