Guesthouse for art lovers in the South of France
Gallerists Kamila Regent and Pierre Jaccaud opened this guest house on a hilltop in Saignon, Provence, in 1993, turning the 18th-century building into a haven for the artistically inclined. As well as bedrooms, it comes with artist-in-residence studios and a gallery. Over the years, its visitors have left their mark on the building, contributing artworks to its eclectic interiors, which feature pebblestone and cement floors, brightly coloured walls and antique furniture.
The guesthouse – on the market via L’Exploreur for €1.1m – holds 700 sq m of living space over four floors. In addition to multiple kitchens and dining rooms, there’s even a small theatre. Outside a gangway leads to a 860 sq m wild garden, with an orchard and a pool overlooking a church.

This historic four-storey townhouse off Lisbon’s Avenida da Liberdade is on the market via Portugal Sotheby’s International Realty for €3.8m. It’s packed with period features, including ornate frescoed ceilings, mouldings, parquet floors, wood panelling and an original carved staircase which spirals its way through the building’s four storeys.
At over 10,000 sq ft, the townhouse is currently configured with nine giant rooms. But as the listing suggests, it’s ripe for conversion into a grand hotel, with private 10-car parking and a landscaped garden courtyard.

Artist and founder of not-for-profit Being Human, Gaynor O’Flynn converted this Victorian tannery into a vast live/work space in Somerset’s Frome. As a working building – containing a number of offices, mixed studio and gallery spaces, capped by a residential apartment on the top floor – it’s a little rough around the edges. But for those looking to tap into the town’s vibrant arts scene (bolstered by the arrival of Hauser & Wirth in nearby Bruton in 2014) it could be a promising project.
The warehouse is on the market via The Modern House for £995,000 as a going concern, with some tenants in place. Interiors feature unpolished concrete floors, original wooden floorboards and steel windows throughout the three-storey structure.

The hard work’s already been done for you inside this Melbourne property, a former tramshed that dates back to 1918. Its top floor has been converted into a sprawling 5-bedroom loft by its current owner, complete with a soaring trussed ceiling and exposed bricks.
Meanwhile the ground floor has been leased as a garage and used to stash his collection of classic cars.
The converted warehouse is on the market for $5.5m via John Morello of Jellis Craig, and according to Domain, the tenant’s lease has run out meaning its future use could be renegotiated, subject to council agreement. Perhaps you fancy trying your hand as a developer – or like the idea of living above a bustling business?

Scandinavian summers are best spent on the water. This 1908 waterside villa – on the market via Per Jansson (price on request) – comes with its own private shoreline and jetty sauna on the island of Tynningös. Used as a hotel, the six-bedroom property’s traditional interiors have been preserved down to the original stoves, painted friezes and herringbone parquet floors.
Set around its private driveway are two smaller guest houses, while the greenhouse doubles as a private dining spot and conference hall. Its new owners could keep it all to themselves – or try their hand at running the property as a guesthouse or events venue.
