Presidents, business moguls, and industrialists have all stayed at this historic estate in Del Rey, northern California, built in 1910 for the founder of Sun-Maid raisins.
H. H. Welsh was already a successful farmer when he commissioned Ohio-born architect Joseph J. Blick to design the almost 8,000 sq ft spread – his only residential design in the region – two years before the businessman set up the California Associated Raisin Co, later known as Sun-Maid raisins.
Over the subsequent decades, the Fresno County estate welcomed dignitaries, including President Hoover, who stayed at the colonial-style mansion in 1930. Walking through its halls is like stepping into the past: the early 20th-century aesthetic is fully intact with a wealth of period features, from hardwood floors to Batchelder-tiled fireplaces, Kokomo stained glass, and an earthy colour palette.

The six-bedroom mansion features two reception rooms, a formal dining room, an office, sunrooms, and a grand hallway with a Spanish mahogany and oak staircase. Other interesting period details include silk-padded walls, historic chandeliers, and even the original Limoges porcelain door knobs, specially imported from France.
Sarah Hedrick is the listing agent, with an asking price of $3.95m.
The California property has undergone some modern upgrades, starting with the gourmet kitchen, equipped with a Wolf range, Sub-Zero refrigerator and high-end appliances, and the house is outfitted with solar panels.
The Sun-Maid mansion comes surrounded by five acres of beautiful grounds, including century-old pomegranate and fig trees, a rose garden with David Austin roses, 50 fruit trees, and a chicken coop.
