Athens bar Papillon channels Parisian cafe culture

A new bar and restaurant in Athens designed by Minos Kosmidis draws inspiration from Belle Époque Paris bistros and 19th-century greenhouses.

Papillon is located in the northern Athens suburb of Neo Psychiko and has two distinct but complementary atmospheres. Up front is the bar area, which nods to French café culture with maroon leather banquettes, Thonet Prague wicker chairs, round marble tables and mirrored panels. Highly ornate floral wallpaper adds opulence to the relaxed daytime space.

The mirrored panels and wicker details continue through to the restaurant area, where a pitched glass roof floods the tables with natural light. The pendant lights have been crowned with greenery, echoing the mossy velvet on the banquettes. A larger seating area is demarcated with wraparound floor-to-ceiling tiles and a low slung brass chandelier.
