Vipp is selling one of its sculptural guesthouses, designed by Johnston Marklee

The Hudson Valley property is a liveable artwork

Purveyor of designer kitchens and 15 enticing guesthouses, the Danish brand Vipp has listed one of its finest properties: a pair of intersecting ellipses in Lumberland, New York, by Los Angeles architects Johnston Marklee. Set beside a Hudson Valley pond within a wooded meadow, around two hours northwest of Manhattan, the 111sqm pavilion is conceived as a low concrete form that gradually reveals itself through the landscape.

A curved courtyard leads into the main living space, where circular skylights wash light across sand-toned stucco walls and concrete floors. The geometry follows the contours of the pond, while large mahogany-framed openings look directly onto the surrounding meadow and water.

The interior palette combines textured plaster, sapele wood joinery, travertine and anodised aluminium elements, including a freestanding Vipp kitchen, naturally, positioned beneath a circular skylight. Two bedrooms sit along the curved perimeter of the plan, each opening towards the landscape through full-height glazing.

Landscape architect Larry Weaner designed the surrounding meadow and green roof using native planting species drawn from the region.

The company is selling the property on the Vipp website.
