This Auckland hotel bar channels a 1930s British boozer

Classic pub meets 1930s glam at Hotel Ponsonby, which transports guests from Auckland straight to the heart of a cosy British boozer.

Local studio CTRL Space designed the bar, which is located inside a former post office building in Ponsonby – a site that had previously struggled to tempt locals.

The owner’s interest in the 1930s era, alongside the colours and materials found in typical British pubs, formed the starting point for the interiors.

The owner’s interest in the 1930s era, alongside the colours and materials found in typical British pubs, formed the starting point for the interiors. CTRL Space says it was key to strike a balance between ‘approachability and style’, which is apparent in the mix of bar stools and patterned carpets together with a grand, reception desk-style bar.

Handmade timber panelling and tube lighting add softness and warmth to the space, while linen lamps and velvet seating introduce an element of glamour. The drinks list includes Hotel Ponsonby’s own pale ale, alongside several other craft beers and a list of classic cocktails.
