Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Actually it’s a flying car – and it could be coming to a road near you very soon.

Skies full of cars are a staple science fiction vision that, up until now, hadn’t quite become reality. But Slovakian company Klein Vision is hoping to change things with its car-to-plane prototype, dubbed the AirCar. Its futuristic, rocket-like design unfolds a pair of wings once the driver presses a button to convert to flight mode.

The design has just received an airworthiness certificate from the Slovak Transport Authority, after completing more than 70 hours of test flights. This included a 35-minute flight from Nitra to Bratislava, where the car landed, converted back to drive mode, and continued to the Slovakian capital by road.

Klein Vision now hopes to begin mass manufacturing the model, with founder Stefan Klein claiming it could ‘change mid-distance travel forever’. Drivers – or should that be pilots – can reach speeds up to 300km an hour in the petrol-powered car, and complete journeys of up to 1,000 km, but will still have to take off and land at an airstrip.
