This home on the Hawaiian island of Maui looks more like a sculpture than a dwelling.
Clifftop House in Kahakuloa was constructed in 2006 by Ljubljana-based Dekleva Gregorič Arhitekti for a windsurf sail designer. The practice conceived the concrete abode as a ‘village’ of spaces that are united by a dramatic, zigzag roof. Its angular form echoes the shape of the mountains and rises from the grassy hillside, bedding the Hawaiian home in the landscape.

‘We sought to create a house that would not damage the environment and not be too visible,’ says architect Tina Gregorič of the Hawaiian property, which occupies a plum spot on Maui’s coastline.
Clifftop House – on the market for $2.8m – was built using local materials that are rich in texture. Rooms inside the three-bedroom, 2,175 sq ft home feature Ipe floors and soaring timber-slatted ceilings, while stucco walls have been made from a mix of white concrete, coral sand, dune sand, and lime. Cabinetry is custom-designed in bamboo plywood.

Elsewhere, floor-to-ceiling windows offer views of the Pacific ocean and the tree-covered surrounds, while the accessible angular roof shades offers a platform for whale-watching.
‘Calling this a house is a misnomer – it’s a piece of art on a hill, and it’s a collection of spaces where an incredible life can unfold,’ says agent Liam Ball, who is handling the sale of the property.

A 42.75 acre oceanfront parcel directly in front of the Clifftop House is also for sale, by separate negotiation.
