Four bridges along the River Thames in London now glow at night with colour and light thanks to a piece of public art known as Illuminated River.

London, Cannon Street, Southwark and Millennium bridges are lit by an art installation formed of connected LED bulbs, sequenced in patterns that subtly unfold across the structures.

Illuminated River replaces old and inefficient lighting and reduces light spill and energy consumption, and, once completed, will illuminate 15 bridges, spanning from Tower in the east to Albert in the west.

Artist Leo Villareal and architectural practice Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands conceived the design, which seeks to ‘transform a snake of darkness into a ribbon of light, threading art through the heart of the city,’ according to Hannah Rothschild, of the Illuminated River Foundation.
