Haight’s Rio de Janeiro store looks like it has been carved out of rock

Chalky walls and stalactite features lend the swimwear store an ancient feel

Stepping inside this Rio clothes shop feels like entering a prehistoric world, thanks to AIA Estúdio’s cavernous interior design.

Home to luxury Brazilian swimwear brand Haight and located inside the city’s Leblon mall, the store rejects the clean lines that usually characterise retail spaces in favour of a more ancient minimalist aesthetic.

The shop is organised around a central pillar that resembles a huge, rocky stalactite – ringed by tables supported by rough-hewn chunks of rock. Lights are hidden in niches to give the sense of sunlight creeping in through cracks in the rock and lending the entire space a welcoming glow.

In a concession to the traditional retail store, clothes are arranged on brass hangers in wall niches, which creates a more modern contrast to the shop’s craggy features.
