Canada finally has its own crop of Michelin star eateries as 13 Toronto restaurants were awarded the prestigious accolade this week – the first in the entire country.
The city is well-known as a culinary juggernaut, but until recently, Canada’s restaurant scene has been largely ignored by Michelin. Toronto is the first city to get its own guide, with Vancouver set to follow before the end of 2022.
Over a dozen restaurants in the GTA were recognised with stars for the inaugural guide – and Sushi Masaki Saito even scooped two. Somewhat predictably, five of the 13 restaurants are located in the posh Yorkville neighbourhood, and the list does have a bias towards Japanese and European cuisine and those offering multi-course tasting menus.
Another 17 restaurants received Bib Gourmand designations – ‘restaurants where one can have two courses and a glass of wine or dessert for less than $60,’ according to Michelin – while 44 are recommended restaurants on Michelin’s website and app. These include some of our favourites, such as Actinolite, Bar Vendetta, Chubby’s, Sara (designed by Odami), Bar Isabel, Pompette, Dil Se and Mother’s Dumplings.
