This Lisbon townhouse is now a double art gallery space

Art galleries Encounter and Jahn und Jahn have collaborated on a new exhibition space in the heart of Lisbon, taking over a 19th-century  townhouse close to the city’s Jardim da Estrela.

Evidence of the building’s former life is present, from the forest green door, with its wrought iron details through to plaster mouldings and worn wooden floorboards across the seven-room gallery space and sculpture garden.

Encounter and Jahn und Jahn already co-hosted shows in the UK and Germany, but the gallery space on Rua de Sao Bernardo is their first time running a permanent space in the Portuguese capital. Rather than taking turns showing work, both galleries will exhibit at the same time, bringing together disparate styles and works by international and local artists inside the townhouse.

A pair of solo shows by Antony Cairns and Vanessa da Silva, whose sculptures have taken up residence in the gallery’s garden, will inaugurate the space for Encounter. Meanwhile, Jahn und Jahn has organised a group exhibition with work by Heinz Butz, Fernanda Fragateiro, Imi Knoebel and Kirsten Ortwed. Navid Nuur has also installed a new piece in the garden.
