Porto hotel The Rebello offers industrial rooms and river-side views

A former cutlery factory finds new life as an aparthotel

Architects Metro Urbe transformed a former kitchen utensil factory and a row of warehouses on the banks of Porto’s Douro River to create new aparthotel, The Rebello.

Stretched across the historic buildings as well as two newly built blocks, the Porto hotel offers 103 apartments in total – which range from studios to three-bedroom duplexes with private terraces.

Interior designer Daniela Franceschini (founder of Lisbon practice Quiet Studios) has paid tribute to The Rebello’s factory past, using steel-framed glass partitions, concrete floors, and metal light fittings to create an industrial atmosphere.

This aesthetic is softened in the bedrooms, which start from around €180 per night, by some choice nautical touches, including rippling headboards – a reference to the waters of the nearby Douro – walnut wood cabinets and undulating mirrors. Many of these pieces have been made by local designers and craftspeople.

Guests can dine in The Rebello’s on-site restaurant Pot&Pan, which serves sharing dishes in kitchen pans as a nod to the building’s former life. There’s also a rooftop cocktail bar, which promises ‘the city’s most photogenic sunset’.
