Opera music can be a bit of a snorefest for some. But the Sydney Opera House wants to legitimise snoozing by hosting regular sleepovers inside its halls.
The Sydney Opera House Trust has submitted a plucky proposal to use six of the famous landmark’s spaces – including the Utzon Room and Joan Sutherland Theatre foyer – as makeshift dormitories for overnight events.
In the document, it states: ‘the accommodation would be provided by way of temporary conversion of a number of rooms and spaces within the Sydney Opera House that are currently occupied by offices or foyers, including minor fit out works.’
Up to 100 people could spent two consecutive nights sleeping in the heritage-listed building if the plan gets the green light, with these events taking place up to five times per year.
The Opera House’s boardroom could provide a more intimate option for five guests, who will get to meet performing artists.
The initiative follows the success of British-German composer Max Richter’s eight-hour overnight show Sleep earlier this summer.
But pillow parties aren’t the only thing on the horizon for the Jørn Utzon-designed building. In 2019, its acoustics will undergo a £120m million upgrade, expected to take two years.
