The underbelly of an overpass and an inverted cityscape with upside-down towers are two of the images that have made the shortlist for EyeEm’s 2017 Photography Awards.

Over 590,000 images were submitted to its web platform and app, making it the world’s largest photography competition according to EyeEm. A shortlist of 100 photographs are unveiled today, including 20 for ‘The Architect’ category – featured here.

Urban density is a recurring theme in the images, as are graphic shapes and textured facades. More than 95,000 images were submitted to The Architect category alone, which asked applicants to ‘show us the structures that move you’.

The photographs will go on show at the EyeEm Photography Festival at Radialsystem V in Berlin from 15 to 17 September, where the Photographer of the Year will be announced.

Among the judges for the competition – which is open to photographers of all skill levels – are National Geographic Traveler’s director of photography Anne Farrar, BBC picture editor Emma Lynch and Refinery29 photography director Toby Kaufmann. Additional categories include ‘The Great Outdoors’, ‘The Street Photographer’, ‘The Photojournalist’ and ‘The Portraitist’.

The Photographer of the Year will win a trip to the Berlin festival, as well as mentorship for a year.
